McDStudio, LLC is a full service architecture and design firm located in the Washington DC area, though we are happy to take on projects throughout the country.
Our philosophy and approach is to work with you to design the best possible space for you, your needs, and that fits your style and way of living or working. We find beauty and excitement in all styles of architecture and design from the traditional to the modern.
At McDStudio, we believe each project is unique and we will help you find that specific solution in our designs. To get to that solution, we've developed a general process to help each step go as smoothly as possible. Think of this process as a set of guidelines, that as with anything, can be tailored to your specific project.
Step 1: Initial Meeting
We will be spending a lot of time together over the course of your projects, so we have found it is a good idea to meet or at least have a few phone conversations before we get started. Think of it as something similar to a first date; we will get to know each other, talk about goals for your project and discuss how best to make these goals a reality.
Step 2: Field Measure & Existing Documentation
This is an often overlooked aspect of design that forms critical part of any successful project. After we agree to work together, McDStudio will come out to field measure and document the existing conditions of your property, home, or commercial space. These measurements and photos will be used to create as set of "as-built" drawings to serve as the starting point for the designs for your project.
Step 3: Schematic Design
Once we have completed our initial meetings and documented the existing conditions, it's time to start drawing. After assessing your programmatic needs, we will develop multiple "schemes" to review and discuss with you. We will work with you to develop the scheme that fits best for your aesthetic and functional needs.
Step 4: Design Development and Budget Pricing
After you have selected a preferred design scheme (or as often occurs, some combination of the multiple schemes we will review), it is time to begin the process of turning our initial sketches and ideas into a "buildable" project. Borrowing a page from the design-build playbook, we often use this as an opportunity to send this first set of hard-lined drawings to a contractor for a budgetary or "ball-park" pricing number. This will serve as a check to ensure we are on budget and lets you, as the owner, start meeting some contractors you might like to work with, assuming of course you don't already have one picked out.
Step 5: Construction and Permit Drawings
This is the time to finalize the design. As part of this phase we will work with you to select any finishes you may need or want assistance with, such as tile, flooring, countertops, cabinetry, etc. We will take this final information and create a set of drawing to be used to obtain the building permit, and to build your project.
Step 6: Bid Review and Contractor Selection
Once the perspective contractors submit their bids, we will help you review the information and make an informed decision as to which contractor would be the best fit for your project.
Step 7: Construction Observation
Once construction begins, we like to stay involved through regular site visits and meetings. This helps keep your project running smooth, and ensures our design intent is met.
